Collector’s favourites: Mont Blanc Pens

Article by Julius Kaane
When one thinks of outstanding collection pens Mont Blanc is surely one of the first brands that come to mind. It is the most searched for, one of the most ancients too: the Meisterstück is the most famous one but the German pen manufacturer has made, and still makes, many other models. There are numerous amateurs.
When an engineer, a paper maker and a banker from Hamburg share the same enthusiasm for writing, they invent a ballpoint pen that works with its own reservoir. Their company is called at first “Simplo Filler Pen Company”, but in 1909 it took on the name of their flagship model: mont blanc. The reservoir was a technological revolution for the time and the pen was immediately booming. The intellectual elite instantly adopt this pen, famously marked by a white star logo. In 1924 the legendary Meisterstück pen is created. It becomes the symbol of the modern pens. Even in 1935 pens Mont Blanc are of such a quality that customers receive a lifetime warranty!
Today the brand is part of the Richmont Group, which includes brands such as Dunhill, Cartier, Jaeger LeCoultre and Lancel. A Mont Blanc pen remains essential for the millions who continue to write with the “pen with the golden nib”. To diversify its offer, the company added the younger-minded ranges Bohème, Scenium and Starwalker, in markers, pencils and pens. But the most appealing for collectors are the limited editions that Mont Blanc releases every year. Usually dedicated to writers, patrons or artists these rare pieces have seen their values soar these last 30 years.
In July 2009 a reputed French pen collector auctioned some noteworthy pieces. In total he put for auction 80 pieces which all sold out. Among those were various “Bohème” models, several “Solitaire” pens, Writer’s editions such as “Voltaire” and “Jules Verne”, commemorative editions of patrons such as “Piermont Morgan” and “Henry Tate” models as well.
Those who bought the pieces know for sure that when you ask about the greatest pens Mont Blanc is what 60% of collectors reply. These valued objects will almost certainly see their value rise in the next years and remain a positive asset.
